Angry Nigerian Bishop Hints Federal Government How to Deal with Rapists – See How
The trend of rape is becoming unbecoming in Nigeria, especially recently where rape cases have been reported in worship centers across the country.
Many have given the Federal Government their stand on rape and how to deal with these menaces, but will all efforts, the rape cases keep rising as though the efforts are either not well implemented or they are just not enough.
The recent advice to the Federal Government and the Judiciary that is making trends, is that of an angry priest who tells the judiciary to treat rapists as criminals.
The Bishop asked that the judiciary shows no leniency, no mercy and should waste no time with process before persecuting rapists. The clergyman seemed angered with the rape trend in Nigeria and mostly in worship centers.
Speaking at St Peter’s Church Aguleri, Rt. Rev. Johnson Ekwe demanded that the Judiciary treat rapists just as criminals, showing no leniency nor mercy.
Stating that they leave their victims in terrible states for the rest of their life, they should suffer the same fate. The bishop also described rape as a conscious show of oppression and power over the timid and weak.
He also called on all concerned authorities, the family, community, organizations, international bodies and the government to put all hands-on deck to stop the upsurge of rape by taking actions against rapists.
His words read;
“The Federal Government and the Nigerian judiciary, particularly, Nigerian judges should come hard on rapists and treat them like criminals.”
“Rape devalues the victim, it is a crime which stigmatizes the emotions, a crime of insult, oppression and revenge that needs to be punished because rapists are criminals and all crimes and their beneficiaries must be punished.
“Rape and other forms of sexual harassment need the urgent and serious attention of family, institutions, civil society groups, government and the international community if we really want to ensure a violence-free society for all.
“We use this opportunity to call on the judiciary to intensify efforts in removing the delay in prosecuting rapists. We believe that the law must no longer be lenient with rapists at all levels to deter perpetrators.”
