Heavy Rain Kills Two, Renders 800 Homeless As 220 Houses Were Destroyed - Details


No less than two persons have been reported dead in the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger state, approximately 800 people have been rendered homeless, also as about 220 houses were destroyed by a heavy downpour in the area on Wednesday.

The properties destroyed by the heavy downpour is estimated to worth about, one hundred and thirty-five million, five hundred thousand naira (135.5m). The incident displaced amount 800 persons from their homes.

According to the reports from Punch, the incident left many injured and are currently being taking proper care of in the hospital.

Some of the affected persons have been reported to be in critical conditions, although they are being cared for in the Local Government's Health Care Center in Mokwa LGA.

The destruction caused by the downpour did not only affect residential houses, it also destroyed a police station, the state office of the Department of State Services, the Government Girls’ Secondary School and Government Science College and other government and private schools and offices.


The house of assembly member representing the Mokwa constituency,
Abdullahi  Gbara, called on the Niger State Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the victims by providing them with relief materials.

He further cried out that the people of Mokwa had been suffering this same dissasterdue to flood very year that the rain is at its peak.

Gbara said that the people of Mokwa suffer a loss of  farm produce every  year due to flood whenever there is a heavy downpour
